Teddy attempts to enlist Toni in a covert mission to recover a mysterious ancient chest. She refuses until Hearst reveals himself and informs her that whoever possesses the scroll that's kept inside it controls Leviathan. The beast, it turns out, is a shapeshifting fallen angel. In the form of a man named Makaray, Leviathan murdered Toni's twin sister a decade earlier. Toni takes the mission and sets out for revenge, unaware it will change everything about her...
Allies and Enemies
Leviathan fell from Heaven with Lucifer, who has tried to keep the beast on a tight leash ever since. However, Leviathan is closer than ever to securing the scroll. With it, the beast will possess the power to usurp his master and command the Archangel Michael. If Toni fails, Leviathan will destroy the Divine Order and snuff out every soul in Heaven, Hell, and everywhere in between.

Toni le Chardin (TLC) – is a pan-sexual, defrocked Kung Fu nun who was trained since birth at a Shaolin Monastery in France. Her desire for instant gratification and her contempt for male authority figures sometimes lead her into situations that call for a kind of restraint she does not yet possess. It's a challenging flaw, but as Hamartia goes, it's not the worst fault a psychic, occult private detective can possess. An orphan who lost her twin sister and part of her own right leg to the rampaging, shapeshifting beast Leviathan, Toni sets out for revenge. Ahimsa and turn the other cheek be damned! She'll have to grow up and build a new family if she's to survive, for no one can defeat the Beast alone.
Rev. Arthur Chambers is the son of a Prince Hall Freemason who was orphaned during the Civil War. Chambers became a widower soon after his honeymoon. The culprit? You guessed it: Makaray Leviathan. He must grow from a faith-shaken woe-is-me inveterate gambler to the engaged-again warrior destined to go on a mission from God.
The Time-Traveling, Ghostly Hindu Sadhu – is Toni's otherworldy sidekick. He does not control his comings and goings, but he is able to bring back baubles from the past and future. He yearns to be funny, but Toni seldom appreciates his humor.
Makaray Leviathan – is the Beast. He's the ageless captain of a ship that bears his name when in human form, and the sea monster, LEVIATHAN when he shapeshifts and wreaks havoc on the high seas. His Achilles heel: The Scroll of St. Michael.
Joshua, Rina, and her sister Sheree LeGree – Joshua serves the African American community in the low country outside Savannah as mayor. He also owns a bank. His youngest, Rina, is Toni's twin sister, who has been reincarnated. She's a summoner of Demons and possesses unique gifts. Sheree, her older sister, carries on a racially forbidden affair with Detective Mosely Beckett and arrests Joshua and scores of other African American men for a triple axe murder of three Savannah women.
The Landlady of Savannah – is a finely quaffed, up-from-the-gutter Asian woman in her fifties. She's known only by her vocation. As the ruthless head of the Rackets in town, she takes Deeds from the deadbeats who cannot cover their gambling losses or control their appetites for the Ladies of the Night in her employ.
Cerberus—Yup. The cute little white Maltese is actually the shapeshifting, three-headed hound guarding the gates of Hell. Always hungry, very demanding, and often precocious, Cerberus provides tension-breaking laughs and provokes the feeling dog lovers get when their favorite pet does absolutely adorable things.
William Randolf Hearst – the world's first billionaire, he's an all-things-occult junkie. He had the Scroll of St. Michael for years and lost it. He wants it back. His newspapers make or break presidents, so he calls on one, Teddy Roosevelt, who has just the right Occult Detective in mind to help him get it back.
President Teddy Roosevelt—the youngest man to serve—ascended to the White House on the death of President McKinley. His children yearn to live up to Teddy's reputation as a pugnacious, take-no-prisoners fighter. They hold a mock sword fight on the lawn, even as Roosevelt and Hearst convince TLC (TONI) to take the case.
